POP3 en zijn voorgangers zijn zo ontworpen dat eindgebruikers die niet over een constante internetverbinding beschikken, hun e-mail kunnen ophalen en lokaal opslaan zodra ze verbonden zijn met het internet en vervolgens de berichten kunnen bekijken en bewerken zonder dat het nodig is om met dat internet verbonden te blijven.</div>
